port
moresby

"Moresby" or "town"
is the only international stopover in PNG. Many travellers
avoid it because of its high crime rates but before
you head off take a few days to explore some of this
interesting town. Architect and political buffs will
enjoy the design and government sittings at Parliament
House. The nearby National Museum and Art Gallery has
an excellent display covering geography, fauna, culture,
ethnography and history of PNG. Exhibits include masks,
shields, totems and outrigger canoes.
The National Botanic Gardens have an excellent hibiscus
and orchid garden plus native animals like the bird
of paradise, the tree kangaroo and the horn bill. On
the Queens Birthday long weekend in June the Central
Province Agricultural show is held in the town showgrounds.
It features local produce, agricultural methods and
tribal dance groups in traditional dress. The Kokoda
trail begins just Port Moresby and has become popular
with Australians and New Zealanders retracing the steps
of their relatives and countrymen during WWII. It takes
5-10 days to complete.
